“What does a kitty say?”
”..M-… meowwww..”
“Good..”
This looks like Danny & Sawyer clothes. Or is it just me?
Obscure Fandom Week 2011: Day 2
If there is an animated movie out there that needs more lovin’, it’s absolutely this one.
Cats Don’t Dance is a 1997 animated musical comedy film, notable as the only fully animated feature produced by Turner Entertainment’s feature animation unit. Set in a world where human beings and anthropomorphic animals live side-by-side, it focuses on a cat named Danny who wants to break into show business in Hollywood.
I don’t drawn anthropomorphic animals often, so this one was quite a challenge that I don’t necessarily think I pulled off completely. But! I still wanted to give homage to this movie for Obscure Fandoms Week because it is seriously fantastic and if you missed this one when you were young, you should definitely watch it now. It’s a lot of good fun with some awesome song-and-dance numbers, but it also creates a commentary on institutional racism in Hollywood’s casting practices that adds a darkly witty twist to the whole thing. If you’re into the whole classic 1930s Hollywood thing—from the art direction to the movie star caricatures—this entire film is pretty much one big nod towards that era. Here’s a few clips:
“Danny’s Arrival Song” | “Little Boat on the Sea” | “The Animal Jam” (If you’re going to watch any of these, ftlog CLICK THIS ONE.) |
This song is called “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now”, and it’s the finale piece of a little-known movie called Cats Don’t Dance (1997).
Okay. I’m almost embarrassed to admit this… but this song makes me cry every time I see this movie. It made me cry like 20 minutes ago in front of my roommates because I was picturing the movie in my head. This is one of the most amazing cartoon movies from when I was young (it was around the era of “Rover Dangerfield” for those who know who Rodney Dangerfield was… don’t mean to be patronizing, but come on… a LOT of young people these days don’t know JACK about the great comedians…)
ANYWHO. :]
This movie is basically what shaped my entire LIFE if you know the story… This young country cat named Danny decides he wants to move to Hollywood to be in the films, and pursue his dreams of singing and dancing with the LA Royalty… (Silly… I know… But idgaf, and neither should you, it’s a story that the majority of the people who live in Hollywood have lived at one point or another. FUCKOFF.)
Well, this song is the culmination of all the bullshit they have to go through to show the movie execs that they have just as much talent and spark as the people in the films. Basically, the Hollywood Film Douchbags of America tell the animals that people are supposed to sing and dance in the movies, and cows say “moo.” And cats say “meow.”
The animals decide to break into Graumann’s Chinese Theater (where the premiere of the last movie the animals were in with Darla Dimple is being held) and surprise the entire audience of Hollywood Royalty with a performance.
And it’s the most beautiful thing ever. They have a retarded amount of extra special FX to use up (moving sets, fireworks, a rolling tank and a giant ship facade… like, really? hehe :P ), and Darla, being the evil child of Satan that she is, spends the entire number trying to fuck up the performance. Everything she does just makes the show better. Everything she does to sabotage just ends up perfectly complimenting the number, and I always wished my life would sync up so perfectly like that…
I’ve come to realize that my life won’t always sync up, but that’s the best part about living. The unexpected can be a great thing sometimes. :)
